Excel and Google Sheets

If your books live in a spreadsheet, that's enough. Cass finds the header row and each column by itself, and you check its reading before anything is saved.

What a sheet can be

The four layouts Cass recognises
LayoutLooks like
Sales registerOne row per invoice: date, customer, amount, often GST and a paid date or status
ExpensesOne row per bill or payment: date, vendor or category, amount
Cash bookMoney in and money out, row by row, often with a running balance
LedgerFull double-entry books: account, debit and credit

A tab that is none of these (a summary or a chart) can be skipped. Files can be .xlsx, .xls or .csv, up to 50,000 rows each.

How a sheet is read

  1. Upload the file or paste the link

In set-up, or later in Settings, Books.

  2. Check the reading

Cass shows which layout each tab is, where its header row is, and which column is the date, the amount, the customer and so on. A column must hold what it is named for: a “Paid” column of dates is a paid date, a “Paid” column of Yes and No is a status.

  3. Change anything that's wrong

Pick another layout or column. Nothing is saved until you import.

  4. Import

The entries go into your books and the diagnosis runs.

Keep it live

Link a Google Sheet or an Excel file on OneDrive instead of uploading it, and Cass reads it again every night, using the reading you approved. Keep typing entries where you always do.

If a tab disappears or a heading changes, the new read waits for you in Settings, Books, with an alert, rather than being guessed. See The nightly read.
